"What Have You Done For Us Lately?"
Well, the upcoming election is growing near ,and the candidates have definitely taken off their kid gloves.
Gone are the niceties, and a full blown knock down drag out brawl has begun. Character assassination is an everyday event, and no one's private affairs are beyond reproach. Everything from McCain's love interests to Clinton's vote on the Iraq war are coming under question. Obama is quickly finding out that the difference between ahead and behind is sometimes just one interview or debate away, even if you are currently king of the mountain. As far as the other candidates, there's only one big question, who are they again?"
Everyone knows that politics are ugly, and most campaign promises never see the light of day. So why are so many people listening to the words of these slick tongued political figures instead of looking at their past performances?
In my opinion, this is the only way to establish what is truth and what is fantasy. In an arena where truth is very cleaverly veiled, maybe what's down in black and white is the only way to go.
As the lyrics of a famous song goes, maybe we should be asking, "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" At the very least we should look into each candidates work history before we go out and cast our golden vote. This is true now and will be even truer in November. Rather than listening to the well thought out debates and speeches that each contestant would have us hear, maybe we need to do our own research. Personally, I want to see how the next potential president reacts in a time of crisis. I want to see how they are doing, and have done in the job they hold now. I want to see all of their past records, not just the part that they have so carefully laid out.
In an era where we seem to be losing many of the rights we took for granite for so long, and the stale overbearing breath of big brother is a constant reminder of this, maybe it's time to ignore the smoke and lights and get down to true performance. For me, this seems to be the only way to prevent the mistakes of the past. Because in the end it's not about how well they dress, talk or even smile, but it's about how they have fulfilled their promises of the past that determines what kind of future we can all expect.
Well, at least this is my opinion, and thank God I still have the right to have one, and I'd really like to make sure that my vote ensures that my grandchildren will as well.
